Overview of the magazine industry

The magazine industry is in a decline and has been for many years; this is all because of other platforms that are used for consumers to get their news, music etc… But through all this the magazine industry can still strive due to their prior success and constant support, some have taken liberty to sell on a multi-platform basis in order to keep their sales high and their relevance in the business to not be pared off.

‘The national trust magazine’ has a circulation of 2,000,000 + making it most popular in the United Kingdom, which is followed by magazines related to large supermarkets e.g. Tesco and also TV listings such as TV Choice which is extremely popular. However, music magazines are not seen to be as a high seller, especially in the UK, this is because these top sellers are relevant to everybody, whereas music has many genres related to the magazines some not appealing to the population so there is less of a reason to buy. The top selling music magazine currently stands at Q magazine, as said the essential music guide as an overall music catch up, where Kerrang has top selling rock magazine. As it is to subscribe to Q it costs a minimum of £15 depending on which platform it is being subscribed for as it is only a monthly magazine, kerrang on the other hand releases 51 issues a year and costs £26, some would say its better value for money but the majority of the population would agree that it is quality over quantity.

Advertisements are a big feature in magazines and getting one in there may be quite tricky, especially into large distributing magazines. For an advertisement to be placed into Kerrang it will cost a company £2999 for a full page add £1600 for half a page, £949 for 1/4 page so Kerrang in comparison is cheaper than other magazines as they haven’t got as big of a revenue as of say Q magazine.

Magazine Survey Results Analysis

Firstly the genre my magazine will be focused on will be punk rock, this is because it outvoted the others and was closely followed by rock which is a similar genre of music anyway, punk is just an offspring of rock.

Many people go to gigs often so I will assume that they would want information of upcoming gigs in the area local to them e.g. UEA or the waterfront. I could include a schedule with line-ups and tour information, this is what people that often attend gigs would want to see as there are not many ways of finding out about live performances in the local area.

The costing of the magazine will be £2.50, though more voted for £4+ it is only by one vote. Four voted for each of £1.50-£1.99, £2.00-£2.49 and £2.50- £2.99, so twelve votes for in between £1.50- £3.00. This also allows me to produce the magazine at a more frequent basis considering they voted for every fortnight, they won’t buy every fortnight for £4+.

Freebies as expected is wanted within the magazine considering three quarters voted to include freebies, so music related items such as a CD for example will be included.

For regular features upcoming festivals and latest music gossip, this is due to the fact these were the highest voted on what they prefer to read about in magazines. Others follow close behind so interviews with artists will also be included considering there is only one vote within it. Another regular feature I will include in my music magazine will be the latest music charts, considering not a lot of people get their update of the charts from magazines but apparently from friends instead, so they need a new place in order to get their updates on music. But four did say that they get it from the internet which is only 2 votes off friends, so this indicates a multiplatform product should be created in order to fulfil the needs of the general population.

Distribution will take place in multiple places, the library and high street retailers got equally the most votes considering these places are popular with students, which will be a large portion of my target audience. There are a few in other such as Costcutter, a local corner shop which is known to everyone as it is close and easy to get to so distribution will also take place in places similar to this.

Colours are an important factor as people are attracted to colour before reading anything so asking what people would like to be main house colours leads to a well-designed magazine in the eyes of my target audience. Red, Black and white had the most by quite a few votes compared to everything else, bold prime colours like these are all anyone wants when they look at a punk heavy magazine. Though a fourth colour will be incorporated for small details on the page in order to keep a bit more of a spectrum, so next voted was blue which also contrasts with the red nicely.

Bands and artists that they would like to see in the magazine were fairly similar to one another with the likes of Sum 41, Blink 182 and sex pistols etc… coming up quite frequently, leads to the belief that they want bands of similar taste, considering quite a number were mentioned and the highest voted was punk artists in comparison to rappers and pop writers.

Survey

Advertisers Mood Board Analysis

This mood board is designed to get an interpretation of what companies will be advertised in my magazine that might appeal to the target audience, these include phone companies, skateboard companies, television shows etc…

I have a few companies related to gaming and technology, a magazine aimed at a teenage to early twenties audience this will be appealing. Steam and Origin are two digital gaming markets, and gaming is a very common hobby within my target audience. Linking to this is the nvidia company, a company that produces computer hardware that improves gaming quality. Other technology includes cameras and amps for example Orange and Canon, both completely different hardware being produced but develops product that’s intended for my target audience. Other hobbies include playing instruments and skateboarding, so companies with the likes of Gibson, a major guitar company, and Almost which is a company that produces skateboard equipment, tending to the hobbies and always keeping people updated with the new developments from their company is important.

I have thrown a few companies that produce consumable products, relentless is a popular drink within my audience as its cheap and available everywhere, the effect of it is just an energy boost that is favourable to younger people. KFC has also got a spot on my board along with McDonalds, fast food chains that have their mark global need to be advertised to keep people updated with brand new products that they produce and deals.

E4 the popular television channel that is enjoyed by a large portion of the population that watch television, advertising brand new TV shows is extremely important, maybe even a channel guide could be included within the magazine for the reader to refer to.

The highly respected car company BMW will be advertised, everyone wants a cheap car around that age as they are just finishing driving lessons and getting their licences so a car will be the next step for them.

Mood Board Analysis

My mood board is a rough view of what the target audience that I am intending my magazine enjoys in everyday life, this is the late teens to early twenties punk fans. Considering the magazine is focused on music I have based the majority of images on music related locations, logos and items that appeal to my target audience; however I have also included TV shows, fashion, styles and hobbies to summarise what kind of people my target audience are to get a good idea.

Style, though not appreciated, is important to the punk lifestyle, they want to seem unique and not part of the ordinary. This is why I have included images of sleeve tattoos and Mohawks, this look is common in the punk world but not in society, which is why it is heavily favoured by fans of this genre. Their apparel is equally as important, the denim jacket and band shirts are a common sight and many fans own them. The denim jacket is to show what bands they like by using patches from gigs or similar events, but many peoples look the same with the likes of Iron Maiden, Slayer and Steel Panther being ordinarily sighted on these jackets, it’s a similar concept to band shirts but highlight a range of bands instead of just one.

TV shows are important to show the likes of a group with a clear idea of what entertains them in this case humour is extremely favoured whilst watching television. That why I have included South Park and Scrubs, they only watch because it’s not serious, it’s funny and uplifting. Coronation Street and Hollyoaks would not be seen on any description of what a rock fan likes, a serious show about ordinary lives is the complete opposite to a group that just wants to go out of their way to make the most out of life as fun as they can. Aside from that they also enjoy watching shows like Kerrang! Due to the music they enjoy and music videos being shown 24/7 on there they can’t get enough, especially since the music genre they like is not heard on many radio stations anymore or shown. Crash Bandicoot can also be seen in the mood board, a popular videogame character like him is just to show the gaming is a popular hobby within their daily lives, a distraction from society to control a virtual thing, doing what they want without consequence is all that they can hope for in life. Movies have just as an equal part with the Pulp Fiction highlight, and also the Kevin Smith image just rounds up all his movies due to the fact that the target audience can relate to his movies or find them extremely entertaining with the development of Chasing Amy, Clerks, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike back for example these are big with my target audience.

I have included several images of where they would like to go on a night out for example, gigs and skate shops are a few places where thy might find themselves, gigs especially. This is the main gathering they go to just because everyone have pretty much the same interests at these places as each other, where they might not be found in everyday life. Skating is a popular hobby due to the fact of the freedom to do what they want and customize their gear to how they like it. Similar to why they play guitar and other instruments found in the rock scene, the customization aspect and how easy it is to pick up to play when they want with no limitation to what they can do.

Linking from the last statement, the garage band I have included is a fairly popular place where bands start off their career before going to play at small venues. A small area to call their own through band practise and sound exactly like their favourite bands is all they need to start a band with mates, not always to make a career though but it is a way to break from the norm and do what they want.

Band logos are a heavy proportion of my mood board, the fact that I am trying to focus my magazine at a group depending what music they like becomes apparent why it is the main portion of the board. Bands such as Sex Pistols, Rage against the Machine and Sum 41 are very well known within the punk scene that’s why they are included and that they follow the same genre with similar looks and styles with similar messages in their music is a large factor of their favourability. It is important I include at least a few of these bands within my magazine, as this is what will attract my target audience to purchase regularly.

Analysis of questionnaire results

From the results gathered a justification has been made as to how the magazine will be designed based on what the audience want to see in it and what will get them to buy.
Firstly I have found out that the current college magazine does not work, considering 90% of students said that they do not read the current college magazine.

To attract an audience I will have to use black, red, white, blue, or green a combination of these will get people to pick up the magazine and look at it. Along with the main image being a picture of a student or students work as voted by 70%.

I will have to include various topics and features in order for it to seem interesting for the target audience, what people wanted was music, food, competitions, fashion, and revision tips/advice. Students have voted these as they are relatable and useful to them, food discount vouchers for the high street shops are useful as this is the vocal point for many to go get their lunch. Music is always interesting to read about, the newest songs and reviews on them grab anyone’s attention. Revision tips are used universally in the college as everyone is going through that, and if there are different subjects every month then these classes are going to read about the best way to go about their subject areas.

95% said that they would be encouraged to buy if free stuff was included, but this will cause the other vote on pricing to be slightly invalid. 40% said that they wouldn’t pay anything for it, having free stuff will cause price to go up, so the next highest price voted was 50p at 20% so this will be final price. It is a fairly cheap price considering that the magazines editions are going to be published monthly, though termly and monthly got the same amount of votes I settled on monthly as there will be ten a year whereas termly will only be four, next lowest was every fortnight so it’s a middle take.

Distribution is going to be in two places, as voted the nearby coffee shop and the reception will be the points on where to sell. These places are highest voted as these are the most popular spots students go to, as soon as they step in to college and when they are chilling on a free.  A multi-platform distribution has to be set in place as technology is the current generation, and what everyone uses in college as its easily accessible, this is why it’s been preferred by 80%.

Their use of online distribution only is a method that is largely favoured within the audience they are reaching out to, a younger generation won’t buy magazines, over looking it up online instead.

Complete Analysis Of a Music Magazine

‘Kerrang!’ the most predominant music magazine in the market, dating back 29 years and earning itself its name as biggest music weekly in the world over this time. Geoff Barton was the editor of the first edition for a one-time supplement for the ‘Sounds’ newspaper, this publication was 1981 covering the new era of heavy metal and British rock, since of which has been slightly changed but still is keeping the original intentions of the magazine. Large success lead to this monthly magazine becoming a weekly issue in 1987, only 6 years passed since production and they were able to gather enough popularity to start distributing on a higher demand. Throughout time Kerrang has been infamous to focusing on the new genres for example Slayer and Bon Jovi were considered as thrash, which was highly popular, but then this genre was castoff when grunge became big with the introduction of Nirvana even though they are very similar in terms of music. So Kerrang throughout history have kept their similar genres but kept moving on to stay modern and not become out dated, though some choices of genre were not popular whilst doing this, the beginning of ‘emo’ was not favoured by the majority and the magazine suffered for their substantial featuring on the ‘emo’ phase.

Overtime Kerrang has become the most recognisable due to the sheer amount of platforms it is on, Kerrang has their online website which is popular with most media distributors as of recent; however they also do organise tours, have their own radio broadcast, award ceremonies, and podcasts. The kerrang tour is a very large event with big named performers and special guests, for example Sum 41 headlining 2016’s and performing in places as small as University of East Anglia all the way to Manchester Albert hall. They have their own television channel, kerrang! TV, that shows a constant flow of music videos and news, video countdowns have been a popular feature with ‘top 50 anthems’ or other lists somewhat similar though fans are still in agony due to their favourite music videos censored due to rights on what’s shown.

From the media pack I’ve gathered that the average reader is 22 years old, which is beneficial to this music magazine as younger people are harder to keep in tune with due to the changes on opinions over time and low incomes they possess. Though the target audience has not changed throughout the years, the older generation still tend to buy the issues considering it’s what they have grown up with. Target audience kerrang is going for would be late teens to mid-twenties, this is evident through Kerrang’s style. The magazine has an anarchistic persona; this comes from the types of music featured and wants to go against the norm of magazine industry, where other music magazines are almost formal due to the editors looking to target a slightly older generation.

Magazine Analysis

Billy Joe Armstrong, lead guitarist and singer of the most iconic rock group of the modern era, that’s why he is the vocal point of the magazine’s cover. This is to quickly see the target audience in which the magazine is aimed at, fans of rock music generally around 16-25. He holding an electric guitar is significant in this instance, it attracts a larger range of people who may not have heard of this particular artist but are into the rock genre, another indication of who the magazine is aimed at. This particular image almost look as it is taken mid concert through the wet hair and him seeming like he is looking towards an audience of people, it is to give an early impression of what the article on him and his band are being talked about, a mid-tour report.

There are not many other images accompanying the main image, except the slipknot image. Slipknot are a band that have been around for years coming and going, so they seem quite appealing to an older generation, considering it is titled ‘slipknot storm memory lane’ a vague title with possible suggestions to a numerous amount of things such as a concert, so those interested want to know what it means and what slipknot are doing.

In comparison to other front covers this one doesn’t have many cover lines; this is to focus the audience on the main cover line. The bands mentioned in these cover lines e.g. Muse and Alice in Chains give the impression that the magazine focuses on fans of rock music, so a teenage generation. ‘Green Day’ being the main cover line, which supports the main image, giving an overview of the primary story in this edition, it also is supported with a short description on what they’re going to say about Green Day to encourage consumers to buy the magazine.

Kerrang’s masthead instantly gives the impression that the music is loud and heavy, shown through the cracked style on the masthead and the exclamation mark at the end. The font does change colour through issues in this instance it is white to contrast with the main image and highlight the image more. The mastheads font looks spray painted on, this fashion of font shows that the music is very anarchistic and the spray paint shows this.

Magazine front covers are always split into thirds, this is to make the layout of the magazine easier for the consumer to recognise sections on the cover and keep some order within the magazine. The left third and right third has stories about what is featured in the magazine, where the centre includes the picture highlighting the main section of the magazine. They keep the stories smaller and separated in order to keep out the way of what the editors believe is the most important section.

Main image is a picture of T.I an influential rap artist throughout the music industry, many fans of rap knows him as he has been in this genre of music for a long time and produces quality music as voted by a large amount of the population. This gives a quick realisation of who the magazine is aimed at, music goers and rap lovers. As per usual rap artists on the front of a magazine seem stern and forthcoming, to show that the music is serious and has meaning to it that the everyday person can relate to. T.I even looks like he is pointing directly to the reader with his hands, how it holds meaning to him and the target audience. There are no other images on this cover it is trying to keep the attention on T.I. and rap In general, the masthead is even covered by T.I.’s head to show he has taken over ‘Vibe’ and that rap is the most dominant feature in the magazine.

The cover-lines are all mentioning large music producers in the rap industry, and nothing but artists. There is no mention, or very little, on small artists or petty features included in the issue. All of these cover lines are scaled based on their importance in the edition, larger text for artists then decreasing size explanations on the articles. Text that the magazine producer wants people to see are highlighted in white and what is not as important is red, for example Keri is red whilst H
ilson is white as people are noticed on last names more predominantly.  The main cover line is in white as it is an important section, it also contains a quote that ends with three dots giving the impression there’s more to it that they will have to read in the magazine.

The font is important in rap as it shows what they represent; they have bold colours white, red and navy. Shows that they are straight up with their music with the use of prime colours, it shows their points of view through their music, this is why the text style is very clear even if it seems plain.

Vibes masthead even if it seems boring and plain it actually represents a lot, it is straight up and clear, easy for the reader to see a simple representation that the magazine is all for the readers benefits and rap music is clear and easy to be interpreted through the lines. Above this is the selling line, what the editors will believe is the highlight of their magazine so they make it the second thing read after the masthead. The use of the words cool, crazy and crass are all words that’s commonly used with the target audience Vibe are going for, having a connection like this with the consumer  will make it feel personal to them.

The rule of thirds is used here to keep an organised layout in order to make it easier for the reader to grasp with cover lines going down the left and right third, then the main image in the middle third. This separation of about one cover line per section makes certain that they are all separate articles.

The contents page is designed to make the readers life easier by guiding them towards articles and news stories on topics they want. This one does exactly that in many ways, it has most of the pages highlighted on this page with page numbers in red font next to the black page titles in black. This gives clear separation of the different texts; these are also grouped under the yellow and black titles to give further understanding of what is included in the articles.

Kerrang is a picture heavy magazine so the contents seem to be fuller than other contents pages, the pictures of prizes, other magazine covers and other pictures related to the magazines content. The main picture is clearly indicating what page the band Dragonforce is articled, it is obvious to the reader that this is the main article due to the amount of space it is covering on the contents. The colours used on that picture are used to extrude Herman Li from the background to draw attention to the foreground; a grey background is used for that as it is a plain background that no one pays attention to.

Font colours used are white, black, yellow, and red. This contrast of different colours can easily show the reader the difference between titles, descriptions, page numbers etc… Style used for fonts is very plain, the title ‘Kerrang!’ is identical to the magazines masthead, and this repetition is important as it stops confusion and keeps the magazine looking professional. The other font styles, though bland, are easily readable keeping it clear and easy for the reader to understand. Titles use a style that has a dissolve appearance to it, an impression that it is worn down and not completely formal, still cracks to represent rock culture.

Authors notes keep them seeming involved with the audience, interaction keeps the reader engaged, the author’s notes also expresses their reasons for decisions they made and what they want to tell the reader. The rest of the layout is constant using rows for their page titles, pictures are scattered in some aspects with no order, going against the layout of society, something else to represent this genre of music.

In the top half of the contents page later articles in the magazine are being advertised to show what’s upcoming in the magazine, including the red page numbers as reference to these articles which the editor presumes are important for information or entertainment purposes.

Vibe’s contents is different to other magazines, the reason for this is that it shows what is in the magazine using symbolism other than just telling the audience. What I gather that the story is about Kanye West and love, a mysterious hand holding a heart, this heart is the only thing in colour on the page whilst the rest is grey, white and black. This main image will attract a lot of attention as people like to know current life of celebrities especially in the region of love, Kanye fans will be particularly excited as they want to know about the current affairs of their favourite producer.

The styling of the entire page is very professional and formal, Vibe often puts rap artists in the lime light and their style of music is very bold and ‘straight-up’; so vibe has to follow this style when they cover rap producers, done by using very mellow colours black, white, grey and a small amount of red to draw attention. The actual contents section on the right side seems quite small compared to the rest of the page and only has two titles ‘features’ and ‘fashion’, and very little amount of page references to the rest of the magazine, Vibe possibly using the audiences curiosity to get them to buy.

What Kanye is wearing is very intricate, and he is notorious for his fashion trends, this is probably to advertise the fashion portion of the magazine as this magazine seems to cover a broad range of topics in each magazine, keep the spectrum of consumers large.

Font styling looks uninteresting but can seem striking when considering the content of the magazine, especially ‘contents’ at the top. The page descriptions and articles underneath ‘features’ and ‘fashion’ use the same style of font but in a less bold format as it is not trying to draw in a consumer. The grouping titles seem classy as formality is a big aspect the magazine has to take into consideration and keep repeating throughout.

The font style is intricate, the black boxes and very large size makes it more interesting than other double page spreads. The newspaper clipping style shows that it is about a story that was in the newspaper that she will be discussing.  An uneven title gives the article an impression of having a disordered portrayal. The reason for this style is to make it eye catching, it’s done this through being big and loud taking up two thirds of one page. It is also a quote from Lily Allen, and is about a topic that was in the news at the time, so her fans want coverage on what is actually true about their role model.

Though readers tend to stay away from articles that require more effort to read then what is needed, so bigger bolder text will fit with the articles style. On the other hand smaller font allows for more info.

Another interesting design for the double page spread is the one image on it taking up a whole page, though highlighting what the article is about there are many other features on the image that makes it appropriate. Her looking directly at the reader makes it welcoming for the reader and more personal for the consumer.  These large design options take up all the room on the page leaving limited room for any unused space which can come across as boring.
However, the article itself text is extremely small and unappealing, there are four columns of text that sends enough information across to the reader for the article to be worth producing so all in all I guess it is successful but it could be made a bit clearer.

The whole theme just comes across as rebellious; Lily is seen as this anyway in the eyes of the public. This explains the not very fashionable clothes, newspaper clippings as the title, and the tattoo on her wrist. People trying to be like her are enticed to read this magazine quite heavily, understand her life and how she goes about it this is what interests people to read. The white, black and red all work with each other extremely well, and these seem to be prominent colours in my own research also, the correlation of colours for example the red names that are connected with the red shirt, makes the article very neat, for an article about a rebellious music producer it seems to stay fairly formal colour scheme wise.

An attention attracting drop capital starts off the article in an appropriate manner due to the fact that it indicates the start of the article, its eye catching because of how bold it is just to keep the text a bit more interesting, as it can come across as extremely dull.

There isn’t a structured layout to where everything’s placed, except the text at the bottom that seems almost grid like, the title is going across Lily Allen’s Picture, the ‘words James McMahon’ isn’t even on a straight line and disorderly.

This double page spread has a layout similar to the last double page with the image taking up a whole page, this is to quickly show who the article is about and if the reader is interested with this particular character before reading the article. However, different to the last there is a lot more information due to the readers of the magazine being older and more knowledge appeals to them. Only two columns though, with less spacing for paragraphs just a long wall of text, where as other double page spreads seem to have more columns in which to give across information.

Gutters are used for readers to not just read directly across in to the next column of text instead of going down, in which they are supposed to read, this one is about a whole centimetre big in order to avoid confusion in the article. Another way to help the reader is the drop capital at the beginning in which to draw attention to the article and indicate the beginning of it, the bold ‘I’ in this case stretches most the way down the first column making it hard to miss the article. The quotation mark before the ‘I’ indicates that there is a quote to  start the article making it more interesting as people want to see what their favourite celebrity has to say about matters in the topic they are being interviewed about.

This being a vogue magazine in which formality is key, a fashion magazine needs to have a good sense of style to it, the word ‘survivor’ is large and takes the top third of the page, this is strong word that they will need to read the article to fully understand what it means fully. The rest of the font for the article is a bland style in which many may find boring, but it’s what looks appealing to readers of this style of magazine.

The image is a main eye catcher with the only colour on the double page spread focusing on Cheryl Cole, colour scheme only using a total of four colours blue, red, white and black three of which used in the picture. The contrast between the makes a stand out image, another important mention of the picture whilst talking about the look is the fact she is looking directly at the reader in which they feel welcome to the page.

College Magazine Analysis

College Magazine

Questionnaire Results
