Mood Board Analysis

My mood board is a rough view of what the target audience that I am intending my magazine enjoys in everyday life, this is the late teens to early twenties punk fans. Considering the magazine is focused on music I have based the majority of images on music related locations, logos and items that appeal to my target audience; however I have also included TV shows, fashion, styles and hobbies to summarise what kind of people my target audience are to get a good idea.

Style, though not appreciated, is important to the punk lifestyle, they want to seem unique and not part of the ordinary. This is why I have included images of sleeve tattoos and Mohawks, this look is common in the punk world but not in society, which is why it is heavily favoured by fans of this genre. Their apparel is equally as important, the denim jacket and band shirts are a common sight and many fans own them. The denim jacket is to show what bands they like by using patches from gigs or similar events, but many peoples look the same with the likes of Iron Maiden, Slayer and Steel Panther being ordinarily sighted on these jackets, it’s a similar concept to band shirts but highlight a range of bands instead of just one.

TV shows are important to show the likes of a group with a clear idea of what entertains them in this case humour is extremely favoured whilst watching television. That why I have included South Park and Scrubs, they only watch because it’s not serious, it’s funny and uplifting. Coronation Street and Hollyoaks would not be seen on any description of what a rock fan likes, a serious show about ordinary lives is the complete opposite to a group that just wants to go out of their way to make the most out of life as fun as they can. Aside from that they also enjoy watching shows like Kerrang! Due to the music they enjoy and music videos being shown 24/7 on there they can’t get enough, especially since the music genre they like is not heard on many radio stations anymore or shown. Crash Bandicoot can also be seen in the mood board, a popular videogame character like him is just to show the gaming is a popular hobby within their daily lives, a distraction from society to control a virtual thing, doing what they want without consequence is all that they can hope for in life. Movies have just as an equal part with the Pulp Fiction highlight, and also the Kevin Smith image just rounds up all his movies due to the fact that the target audience can relate to his movies or find them extremely entertaining with the development of Chasing Amy, Clerks, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike back for example these are big with my target audience.

I have included several images of where they would like to go on a night out for example, gigs and skate shops are a few places where thy might find themselves, gigs especially. This is the main gathering they go to just because everyone have pretty much the same interests at these places as each other, where they might not be found in everyday life. Skating is a popular hobby due to the fact of the freedom to do what they want and customize their gear to how they like it. Similar to why they play guitar and other instruments found in the rock scene, the customization aspect and how easy it is to pick up to play when they want with no limitation to what they can do.

Linking from the last statement, the garage band I have included is a fairly popular place where bands start off their career before going to play at small venues. A small area to call their own through band practise and sound exactly like their favourite bands is all they need to start a band with mates, not always to make a career though but it is a way to break from the norm and do what they want.

Band logos are a heavy proportion of my mood board, the fact that I am trying to focus my magazine at a group depending what music they like becomes apparent why it is the main portion of the board. Bands such as Sex Pistols, Rage against the Machine and Sum 41 are very well known within the punk scene that’s why they are included and that they follow the same genre with similar looks and styles with similar messages in their music is a large factor of their favourability. It is important I include at least a few of these bands within my magazine, as this is what will attract my target audience to purchase regularly.
