The magazine industry is in a decline and has been for many
years; this is all because of other platforms that are used for consumers to
get their news, music etc… But through all this the magazine industry can still
strive due to their prior success and constant support, some have taken liberty
to sell on a multi-platform basis in order to keep their sales high and their
relevance in the business to not be pared off.
‘The national trust magazine’ has a circulation of 2,000,000
+ making it most popular in the United Kingdom, which is followed by magazines
related to large supermarkets e.g. Tesco and also TV listings such as TV Choice
which is extremely popular. However, music magazines are not seen to be as a
high seller, especially in the UK, this is because these top sellers are
relevant to everybody, whereas music has many genres related to the magazines
some not appealing to the population so there is less of a reason to buy. The top
selling music magazine currently stands at Q magazine, as said the essential
music guide as an overall music catch up, where Kerrang has top selling rock
magazine. As it is to subscribe to Q it costs a minimum of £15 depending on
which platform it is being subscribed for as it is only a monthly magazine,
kerrang on the other hand releases 51 issues a year and costs £26, some would
say its better value for money but the majority of the population would agree
that it is quality over quantity.
Advertisements are a big feature in magazines and getting
one in there may be quite tricky, especially into large distributing magazines.
For an advertisement to be placed into Kerrang it will cost a company £2999 for
a full page add £1600 for half a page, £949 for 1/4 page so Kerrang in
comparison is cheaper than other magazines as they haven’t got as big of a
revenue as of say Q magazine.
